Consort is one of the most trusted black currant cultivars for North American gardeners. It was specifically bred for resistance to white pine blister rust (Cronartium ribicola), making it a safer choice in regions where susceptible Ribes are restricted. The compact deciduous shrub grows 3–5 feet tall and 3–4 feet wide, producing abundant clusters of large, dark purple-black currants that ripen in early to mid-summer. The berries are intensely flavored, high in vitamin C and antioxidants, and ideal for jams, jellies, juice, cordials, wines, and baked goods.

Self-fertile — a single plant will produce generous crops. Prefers full sun to partial shade and moist, well-draining fertile soil. Thrives in Zones 3-7 and is an excellent choice for cold climates.
