Description
Nanking Bush Cherry (Prunus tomentosa) — cold-hardy fruiting shrub with fragrant spring blossoms and clusters of tart-sweet red cherries in summer. Live plant, 12+ inches tall. USDA Zones 2-7.
Nanking Cherry is one of the most cold-tolerant fruiting shrubs available, thriving from Zone 2 through Zone 7. In early spring, the dense multi-stemmed bush erupts in a cloud of fragrant white to pale pink blossoms that draw bees and early pollinators. By midsummer, the branches are loaded with small, bright red cherries — sweet-tart and perfect for fresh eating, jams, jellies, and pies. Mature height reaches 6–10 feet with a similar spread, making it ideal as a productive hedge or a bold ornamental specimen.
Nanking Cherry is largely self-fertile but sets heavier crops with a second plant nearby. It adapts to a wide range of soils, tolerates drought once established, and requires minimal pruning. An exceptional dual-purpose plant for edible landscapes, wildlife gardens, and homestead plantings.
