Description
Jonkheer Van Tets Red Currant (Ribes rubrum ‘Jonkheer Van Tets’) — self-fertile, heavy-cropping red currant shrub producing long clusters of bright red berries, one of the earliest and most productive red currant varieties. Live starter plant. USDA Zones 3-7.
Jonkheer Van Tets is widely regarded as one of the best red currant cultivars for home gardens. It is among the earliest to ripen and produces exceptionally long, heavily loaded berry clusters (strigs) with glistening bright red currants. The flavor is classic currant — tart-sweet and aromatic — perfect for jams, jellies, juices, sauces, and desserts. The compact upright shrub reaches 3–5 feet tall and 3–4 feet wide, suits small gardens, and can even be grown in containers.
Self-fertile, so a single plant will produce fruit, though yields increase with a companion plant nearby. Thrives in Zones 3-7, prefers full sun to partial shade, and does well in rich, well-draining soil with consistent moisture. A reliable, productive, and attractive addition to any edible garden or homestead fruiting border.
