Description
Red Chokeberry (Aronia arbutifolia) — native four-season fruiting shrub with antioxidant-rich red berries, brilliant fall foliage, and exceptional adaptability. Live well-rooted plant, approximately 12+ inches. USDA Zones 4-9.
Red Chokeberry is a standout native shrub valued for both its ornamental beauty and its nutritious berries. Spring brings clusters of white to pale pink flowers that attract pollinators. By late summer and fall, the branches are laden with vivid red berries high in antioxidants — useful for juices, jams, and herbal preparations. Fall foliage turns a spectacular scarlet-red, and the persistent berries continue to feed birds through winter. Mature height is 6–10 feet with a spread of 3–6 feet.
One of the most adaptable shrubs available: Red Chokeberry thrives in wet boggy soils or dry upland sites, full sun to partial shade, and a wide range from Zone 4 to Zone 9. It is commonly used in rain gardens, erosion control, stream bank stabilization, native plant restoration, and wildlife habitat plantings. Low maintenance and long-lived — an outstanding native for tough spots where other shrubs struggle.
