Little Ruby Fig — Well-Rooted Starter Plant, 8″+

Description

Little Ruby is a compact fig selection from Denny McGaughy, the breeder behind the popular ‘Olympian’ fig. It stays naturally small — roughly 4 to 6 feet at maturity — which makes it one of the best figs available for long-term container culture on a deck, patio, or balcony.

The fruit is where it earns its name. Skin ripens a reddish-brown, and the flesh inside is a deep strawberry red, sugary and jammy in the style of Chicago Hardy. Expect a light early (breba) crop on last year’s wood plus a heavier main crop on new growth, ripening from late July into early October.

Figs are self-fertile, so you only need one plant to get fruit — no pollinator partner required. Give it full sun (8+ hours), a well-drained mix, and it will typically begin fruiting within one to two years of planting.

What you receive: a well-rooted, actively growing plant at least 8 inches tall, shipped in its nursery pot. Photo is representative of current stock — your plant will be comparable in size and grade.

Growing note: in the ground Little Ruby is reliable in USDA zones 7–10 and has taken temperatures down to the 0–5°F range. In zone 6, grow it in a container and overwinter it dormant in an unheated garage or shed — fig roots are considerably less cold-hardy than the tops.
