Purple Fig — Well-Rooted Starter Plant, 8″+

Description

This is a purple-fruited common fig prized for two things: it starts bearing unusually young, and the ripe fruit is exceptional. Where many fig varieties won’t give you a crop of consequence until they’re around five years old, this one commonly sets a small crop within its first year or two in the ground.

Fruit ripens a deep, dark purple with soft, juicy flesh. The flavor runs sweet and jammy — honey, brown sugar, a little cinnamon and melon — set off by a distinctly spicy skin that contrasts the sweet pulp. In a good season you can get three waves: a light breba crop in spring, the heavy main crop around July, and a fall extension crop in mild climates.

Left unpruned it becomes a vigorous, spreading small tree in the 8 to 15 foot range, most commonly settling around 8 to 10 feet tall and about as wide. Annual pruning keeps it well within reach for easy picking, and it takes container culture readily. It also carries useful resistance to the leaf diseases that defoliate figs in humid summers, which makes it a lower-maintenance choice anywhere the air stays heavy in July and August. Figs are self-fertile, so a single plant will fruit — no pollinator partner needed.

Growing note — please read before ordering: this is a Southern fig. It is reliably hardy in USDA zones 7–10 and is cold sensitive compared to varieties like Chicago Hardy. In zone 6 and colder, grow it in a container and overwinter it dormant in an unheated garage or shed. One caveat on flavor: pick it fully ripe. Underripe fruit is bland and gives no hint of what the variety can do.
